Our Story

A hive of analogies - bees across every offering

One picture - the hive - stretches naturally across everything Witz Endz does. Here’s a story for each part of the business you can lean on in copy, talks, the website, and the brand deck.

The master metaphor: you’re the beekeeper’s partner

A hive doesn’t need another bee living inside it full-time. What it needs, now and then, is someone who understands hives - who can lift the lid, read what’s really going on, and know exactly which frame to adjust so the colony thrives. That’s Witz Endz. We’re not a permanent cost on your payroll; we’re the experienced hand who tends the hive when it matters and leaves it stronger than we found it.

Business Development - the honeycomb

Nature’s most efficient structure, built on purpose.

Bees build in hexagons - the shape that holds the most honey using the least wax, with no wasted space and no wasted effort. No committee designed that; it’s just what works. That’s exactly what we do in business development: find where wax is being wasted — leaky pricing, thin margins, clumsy processes - and rebuild the structure so every bit of effort holds more. A business that’s ‘systemised the chaos’ is simply a well-built honeycomb: it works whether or not the owner is standing in the room.

Strategy - the waggle dance

One bee finds the nectar. Then the whole hive knows exactly where to go.

When a scout bee finds a rich source, it comes home and dances — and that dance encodes the precise direction and distance for every other bee to follow. It is, remarkably, measurable communication: angle and duration carry real numbers. That’s strategy done properly. It’s not a glossy report in a drawer; it’s turning one clear insight into a direction the whole team can act on — and, true to your belief that ‘if we can measure it, we can manage it,’ it comes with distance and bearing attached.

Consultancy - the scout bee on call

Expertise on tap, not on the payroll.

Scout bees are the hive’s sounding-out mechanism - sent to weigh up options and report back before the colony commits. That’s the consultancy service: a senior head you send ahead of a big decision, who’s seen the terrain before and comes back with a straight answer. You don’t keep a scout circling all day; you call one when the decision matters. Hire the experience by the hour, the project, or the retainer.

Funding & Grants (Profit Labz) - foraging the far field

The nectar is out there. Someone has to know which flowers to visit.

There’s real value in the field - government funding, wage subsidies, grants, Māori and iwi pathways -but it doesn’t walk itself back to the hive. Foragers know which flowers are worth the trip, they gather what’s there, and they bring it home before the season turns. Profit Labz is that forager: we know where the nectar is, we know it’s a moving season (always checked against current criteria before you act), and we make sure it ends up in your hive rather than left in the field.

Motivational Speaking - cross-pollination

Carrying good ideas from hive to hive, so whole industries bloom.

A foraging bee doesn’t just take - it pollinates, carrying what it’s picked up from one flower to the next, and the whole field is more fertile for it. That’s exactly what a great keynote or workshop does: Martz carries hard-won ideas from thirty-five businesses into your room, and your people leave carrying them somewhere new. A keynote is the waggle dance for a hall of five hundred; a workshop is the hive humming as everyone gets to work.

Business Valuations - weighing the honey

You can’t judge a hive by the box. You weigh what’s inside.

From the outside, two hives can look identical. The only honest way to know what one’s worth is to open it and weigh the honey. A desktop valuation is a good, quick heft of the frames; a full AES 2 (CA ANZ) valuation is the assayer’s scale - rigorous, independent, and heavy enough to stand up to a buyer, a bank, a court or the IRD. Your business is likely your biggest hive; it pays to know what the honey actually weighs.

Advances - the swarm that moves the whole colony forward

Sometimes the hive steps out - deliberately - to grow.

A swarm looks like chaos and is anything but: it’s the colony making a considered, collective move to somewhere with more room to thrive. That’s why you don’t call them retreats. An Advance is the swarm - a leadership team stepping out of the noise, together, not to escape the business but to relocate it somewhere better. Everyone moves as one, and the colony comes back stronger.

Culture & People - Process-Systems - the colony itself

The living proof of your whole philosophy.

A hive is the finest example in nature of the right individual doing the right job at the right time - roles shift as they’re needed, nobody waits to be told twice, and the result is something none of them could build alone. That’s the heart of Witz Endz: the right person, the right job, the right time, the right tools, the right place. We help you build a colony, not just a collection of busy people.

Stop swatting at problems - fix the hive

We've been where you are.
Probably twice.

Witz Endz isn't run by career consultants who've only ever read about business in a textbook. It's led by Martz Witty- a former Chartered Accountant who has personally owned more than 35 businesses over the years. Bars, accountancy firms, structural steel engineering, heating and air conditioning, transport and a labour-hire company with 220-plus staff. Some soared, one famously lost him more than $30,000 for every day the doors were open. Every single one taught him something he now brings to your table.

That's the difference. When we talk about cashflow, culture, systems, growth or selling up, we're not theorising - we've lived it, on both the good days and the ones that keep you up at night.

Who Is Martz?

Martz never planned on any of this. He wanted to be a mechanic, missed out on an apprenticeship, and took his dad's advice to try a business course instead. He came out the other side a Chartered Accountant - though, as anyone who's met him will tell you, he never has fitted the stereotype.

He started at a local Christchurch firm, worked his way up to managing partner, and realised along the way that the real buzz wasn't in the numbers - it was in helping people. That realisation has shaped everything since: a career spanning chartered accountancy, business development and professional speaking, and a genuine belief that you can be seriously good at what you do and still have a laugh doing it.

His shelf isn't short on recognition, either. Martz is a past National President and life member of the Professional Speakers Association of New Zealand, a long-serving contributor to the chartered accounting profession, a published author, and a recipient of the Te Kahurangi award for his outstanding contribution to the speaking profession. In 2005 he began learning te reo Māori through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, achieving TARM Level 5 - a reflection of his deep respect for Aotearoa's culture and history.

What we believe

It's the journey, not the destination. Destinations have a habit of moving anyway. We're here for the long haul with you.

If you can measure it, you can manage it. Growth doesn't have to mean "bigger." First we work out what success actually looks like for you — then we make it measurable, and manageable.

It's better to make the wrong decision than no decision. Standing still is the riskiest move of all. We'll help you back yourself and move.

The biggest thing holding most people back? Not asking for help. So consider this your invitation.

Serious work - Good humour!

Yes, there are bees. Yes, you might get offered a Tim Tam on arrival. We think hospitality and warmth aren't the opposite of professionalism - they're part of it.

Business is hard enough without your advisers making it heavier. We'd rather be the people you actually look forward to seeing.

Meet The Team

Martz Witty - Principal

Image

Martz has two adult children and he's quick to point out he started very young — plus two granddaughters and a grandson, about whom he is entirely incapable of being objective.

Home is supervised by Gin, a dalmatian, and Tonic, a ragdoll cat. Yes, they came as a pair. No, he has no regrets.

The teenage dream of becoming a mechanic never actually died — it just moved to the garage. Weekends are spent grazing knuckles, dropping sockets into places sockets cannot be retrieved from, and keeping his swearing fluent and up to date. The current patient is a 1978 "one-lady-owner" Mini Clubman, which by Martz's own reckoning makes him the second lady owner.

Then there's the work he does for love rather than invoice. Charities and not-for-profits get Martz at heavily discounted rates — and often at no charge at all. Whether it's a strategy session for a board that's stuck, a workshop to re-energise a management team, or a presentation that gives members a decent shot of enthusiasm, the principle is the same: good causes run on tight budgets and borrowed time, and his fee should never be the thing standing in the way.

Jocelyn Scott - E.A. (Executive Assistant)

2002 saw Jocelyn come to work with Martz in his then accounting firm as a personal assistant to keep him on the straight and narrow and to help manage his time while juggling being a solo dad to two (then) young boys.

Prior to this Jocelyn has worked in many roles since leaving school; her first job was as a receptionist at a timber merchants, then a medical receptionist, admin for a farm accountant, and PA in corporate and a Government Department. Since 2002 and some metamorphoses since Jocelyn remains an integral part of the Witz Endz Group. As chief engineer of communications and systems she’s definitely the one to talk to if you can’t track Martz or any of the other presenters down.

Administration is a passion for her and consequently everything runs like clockwork. Whilst it’s often said if it’s not broken then don’t fix it you will still find Jocelyn tweaking improvements and enhancements in everything she does.

Outside of work Jocelyn enjoys 3 adult daughters, two of whom and two grandson's live overseas, so travel is on the horizon for her.  At home Miss Bea the miniature Schnauzer rules the house and keeps her very busy with walks and adventures. You could say Jocelyn is a crafty one, but that would refer to the most amazing paper crafts that keep appearing. Need a special card or paper gift for a loved one? Give her a call.

Mr Gin

(Liver spotted Dalmatian)

Mr Gin is the Director of Security. He undertakes detailed inspections of potential intruders (we call them guests or clients) and makes sure they are not secretly hiding sandwiches or sausage rolls. Items have been known to be confiscated for additional research, only to be never seen again.

Miss Bea

(Black Mini Schnauzer)

Miss Bea is chief paper shredder and knee warmer. Quietly unassuming her personality soon shines with a visitor arriving. Frenetic zoomies soon subside and once you pay the toll of a head pat or tummy rub you’re admitted into her family of trusted people.

Miss Tonic

(Rag doll)

Miss Tonic is the floof ball that is guaranteed to clear the desktop in 3 seconds flat. Keys, pens, papers… even coffee mugs! Don’t let the blue eyes fool you.
If you wonder how you are going at work, then this judgemental little minx will be sure and drive you straight into your next double shot short black.
